Saku Soukka (b. 1982, Oulunsalo) is visual artist based in Helsinki. He photographs, makes videos and installations based on photography and writes poetry.
Soukka began working in the beginning of the '00s mainly as a self-taught freelance photographer and acted as an assistant to photographic artist Esko Männikkö (2003–2007). Soukka's journalistic photographs and writings were published, inter alia, in the magazines Voima ja Kumppani. In 2009, Soukka began to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. He graduated in 2016 and has been independent artist since. Soukka has held about a dozen solo exhibitions and taken part in many group exhibitions in Finland and abroad. He qualified for the final of EMMA Prize competition of young photographers (Emma, Espoo Museum of Modern Art, 2010). His video work was selected (Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 2014). In 2016, Soukka published his first book Paperipeili (Noxboox), which combined photography and poetry.
In the event Là-bas→ Self as the Third, Soukka's four-part photographic projection Ikkuna välissä (Window in Between) is premiered. Soukka began sketching the work at the beginning of his studies in Academy of Fine Arts and has been finishing it after completing his studies. The ensemble work creates concentrated poetic impressions and is composed of four pieces based on the seasons, in which photographs taken in Helsinki mesh and fade to each other in connection with a sound pictures of field recordings (Jani P and Saku Kämäräinen). Window in Between is the most extensive presented work of Soukka's photographic artistry so far.
The works Window in Between (Autumn) (2016), Window in Between (Winter) (2017), Window in Between (Spring) (2017) ja Window in Between (Summer) (2017) have been completed along with the passing seasons. Soukka has presented the draft versions of the autumn and winter parts separately as exhibitions and screenings. In the event Là-bas→ Self As the Third, the complete Ikkuna välissä is exhibited as a whole piece for the first time.
